Learning from home sounds easy until the sofa, the phone and the fridge all start competing with your lesson. After guiding hundreds of Fernbrook Reading Room students through their first online courses, we know thriving remotely is less about willpower and more about setup.
1. Give your desk a job description
Your brain links places to behaviours. A corner that is only for study — even a cleared kitchen table with a lamp — tells your mind that lessons happen here. Keep course tabs open and everything else closed before you press play.
2. Study in sprints, not marathons
Twenty-five focused minutes followed by a five-minute stretch beats two glazed hours. Our lessons average under ten minutes precisely so you can stack two or three sprints and feel progress daily.
3. Write something every session
Pause once per video and summarise the idea in one sentence, in your own words. Students who keep a one-line-per-lesson log finish courses twice as often — and their revision notes write themselves.
4. Ask early, ask often
Our mentors answer around the clock. The students who ask three small questions in week one outperform silent strugglers by week four, every single term.
Start with a free trial lesson this week, set up your corner, and run your first sprint. Future you — certificate in hand — will be glad you did.
